Seaside topic, rainbow fish, KS1, SEN, ASD, autism

(1)
Resources used with a mixed age group of children with autism when reading the Rainbow Fish during our seaside topic. Sheet to generate describing words before writing about the Rainbow Fish, a wordsearch, 'feelings' activity for children who struggle to imagine how a character may feel, grammar activity (identify if a sentence needs a question mark or full stop). As there is a starfish in the book, we also learnt about starfish, using a symbol supported fact sheet to answer reading comprehension questions (differentiated).

Autumn Winter Sorting task

(1)
Sorting task designed for students with autism / SEN This is designed to be used in different ways depending on ability level: * cut and laminate cards, students sort into 'autumn' and 'winter' baskets. * students write 'autumn' and 'winter' in books, they then cut and paste pictures under the correct heading. * students write headings in book then use chart to write each fact into their books * students write headings in book then use chart to write sentences, using each fact in a sentence.
STEM Lego challenge cards, some Christmas themed. SEN/KS1

STEM Lego challenge cards, some Christmas themed. SEN/KS1

(1)
Lego challenge cards, symbol supported for non / early readers. Some are Christmas themed as I’ve just made them to try and keep my children busy during this last week. Children choose or are given a card which gives an instruction - e.g. build a Christmas tree / first letter of your name and use Lego to build as instructed. It’s a fairly open ended activity but my hope is to provide more structure and purpose to play for my children with autism as some have very short attention spans and flit from activity to activity without any meaningful engagement. 24 cards in all, best printed onto card or laminated so they last.

Various winter topic activities. We have been reading Little Polar Bear so have learnt about the North Pole / Arctic and what adaptations polar bears have in order to live where they do. Activities include picture of a polar bear / cards for children to stick on sheet to label (polar bear physical appearance) Jungle / Arctic sorting table with 2 sets of cards for children to sort (set one - facts about the areas, set two - animals) Polar bear adaptations worksheet / facts to stick. Two different versions of this, one is simplified. Short North Pole PowerPoint I have included resources in publisher and PDF format. Used for children in KS1 and KS2 with autism. Also suitable for mainstream pupils / older pupils.

Continent sorting activity

Continent sorting activity

(0)
Activity created for primary SEN group. Children cut and pasted a map of the continent and a picture of that continents animals into the appropriate box. Some animal pictures are on a map of the continent to give children a visual clue - because of this I gave them the strip of maps and the strip of animal pictures separately to avoid confusion. I let the children cut out their pictures themselves to promote fine motor skills.

Under the Sea (also lighthouse / starfish) EYFS / KS1 / SEN, selection of topic based resources

A hotchpotch of various resources I used with my ASD specialist provision class during a recent Under the Sea topic. My class were mixed ages and varied widely in ability (P4 to approx Y1/Y2 ability) so the resources reflect this. These resources are suitable for any age group who are working at this level, and also suitable for mainstream. There are 10 files included: L is for lighthouse - simple level, tracing ‘l’ and colouring items that start with ‘l’ S is for starfish - as above but ‘s’ Sea Creatures - match photo to image (simple reasoning / develop generalising) Lighthouse Facts - 2 A4 worksheets for basic lighthouse facts. 1 page is words only, 2nd sheet is supported by symbols. Lighthouse Factsheet - very similar to above but slightly prettier - used in a previous year with a group who were more able and could manage with more visual distraction. Lighthouse intro - basic powerpoint Draw and label a lighthouse - simple A4 sheet Starfish ‘eat’ or ‘live’ sorting sheet Starfish fact sheet - A4 sheet for learners to complete Under the sea describing words - topic related pictures, learners needed to find a describing word for each picture (e.g. ______ boat ) 2 copies per A4 page

KS1 Science 'Staying Alive' topic, sorting tasks / activities

(0)
Resources made for Science Week with a focus on ‘Staying Alive’. We learnt about the difference between living and non living things, that animals including humans grow from babies into adults, that some animals grow inside their mother while others hatch from an egg, children kept a food journal for later learning about a balanced diet. Before learning about basic needs, children attempted to complete a mind map, adding to this later. Living / Not Living / Never Lived sorting activity / workstation task What do you call a baby… table to complete 5 day food journal - table for students to complete (Monday to Friday) Egg or Mum? Sorting activity / workstation task - did this animal grow inside its mother or hatch from an egg? Human basic needs - male and female mind map activity, pupils to add what is essential for human life. Designed for KS1 / KS2 children with autism but also suitable for mainstream learners or older learners with SEN.

Weekly weather log_chart, morning routine, SEN, ASD, KS1

Weekly weather recording chart / log. Colour coordinated for ease of use. Used for pupils with ASD / SLD to develop awareness of the weather, but equally suitable for other pupils with SEN or children in KS1. Resource can be used as a cut and stick worksheet, or could be laminated to be used more than once. It could also be blown up to A3 size and used as a whole class or small group resource. I have used a very similar resource as part of my class morning routine.

Simple Orion story for primary children with SEN / autism We read the story together on the PowerPoint. The word document was cut into strips and we sequenced them as a group. We then made our own telescopes from cardboard tubes to look at the Orion constellation (used our telescopes to look at a square of card with pin pricks to show the 'Orion constellation').
